Rules
Four in a Row is a game with fairly simple rules. Two players alternate placing pieces on a rectangular board, most often 7x6 (7 columns with 6 rows). The piece placed in each move ends up in the lowest empty spot in the chosen column.

If a player manages to arrange four of his or her pieces in a vertical, diagonal, or horizontal row, that player wins.

Lines of five or longer also count as a win. If the board is filled so no empty spaces remain, and neither player has made four in a row anywhere, the game is a draw.

Foreign Arrow follows the convention of calling the first player White or X, and the second Black or O. The notation seen in the preceding diagrams is used throughout the site as well. See the
nomenclature page for more details.
